Let me introduce myself to you

Updated: May 27, 2021

As you already likely know, my name is Helena Tiainen and I am a visual artist and designer. I have been making art most of my life and I have a degree in painting and drawing with minor in printmaking. I have also experimented with ceramics and some sculpture and photography, but most of my experience as an artist is in two and three dimensional painting and drawing and digital/mixed media design. To give you an insight into my inspirations and motivations, I am going to share my artist statement with you in this first post of mine here on wix. If you are interested in learning more, keep reading my statement directly below. Thank you!

The Dark and The Light

I believe that all life is one. But we live in a world of duality and polarity and here on earth there is no light without dark.

My influences are many, from the beauty of nature to the works of great artists, leaders and thinkers such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Rene Magritte, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Maya Angelou, among many others. Myth and religion, ancient civilizations and mystical experiences also influence me greatly.

Through my art, I aim to express perspectives of the multidimensional nature of consciousness, of oneness and the interconnectedness of all that is, whether real or imagined. In most of my works, one form literally flows into another and many of my works can be viewed and hung in several directions. This is the way I intentionally design them and this is a metaphor for changing perspectives and ways of seeing.

My works are mainly a combination of the abstract and the easily recognizable. I love patterns. I paint, mostly with acrylics, draw and create mixed media digital art and design, often starting with scans of handmade pieces, since tactile experience is important to me.

My process is intuitive. My art is about exploring the magical and mystical nature of things, the subconscious, the sacred and profane, the beautiful, the peculiar, the sublime.
